On January 15, 2010, the representative office of Cong An Nhan Dan (People’s Police) newspaper in Ho Chi Minh City held a get-together with nearly 100 businesspeople joining the Tet cung dong bao ngheo (Helping poor people enjoy the Lunar New Year) program.

On behalf of the organizing board, Senior Lieutenant Colonel Tran Kim Tham, head of Cong An Nhan Dan’s representative office in HCMC, briefed participants about the newspaper’s operations and social and charitable programs in 2009.

The images of the newspaper staff and soldiers, businesspeople and benefactors during social and charitable programs in remote poor areas had made a strong impression on the community, Mr. Tham said.

He also extended the thank-you of Major-General Nguyen Huu Uoc, deputy head of the Armed Forces Building General Department and Editor-in-chief of Cong An Nhan Dan newspaper, to all businesspeople and people for their contributions to the program.
Speaking at the get-together, Major-General Nguyen Minh Dung, deputy head of the Ministry of Public Security’s Armed Forces Building General Department, praised the good works of Cong An Nhan Dan and thanked the kindness of businesspeople and donors who have accompanied the newspaper’s social and charitable programs in the past years.

Over VND1 billion to buy Tet gifts for poor people
At the annual get-together, organized at the same venue – Restaurant 241 of Mr. Ngo Buu Khanh since it was launched in 2001, many businesspeople pledged to continue contributions for the program.

Madam Do Thi Kim Lien, General Director of AAA Assurance Corporation and Honorary Consul of the Republic of South Africa in HCMC, is on a business trip in South Africa and thus could not attend the get-together. However, she called to ask staff to bring VND50 million to support the program.

Mr. Le Van Kiem, General Director of the Long Thanh Golf Course Joint Stock Company, felt pity not to attend the get-together as he is on a business trip. But he sent a representative to bring VND450 million for the program.

Mr. Kiem said on a telephone to the organizing board before going away on business: “This is not a big money, but I and my family is very happy to accompany Cong An Nhan Dan newspaper to help poor people through this meaningful program.”

Mr. Lam Tan Loi, owner of Duy Loi Foldable Hammock Enterprise, donated VND100 million while Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tan, director of Viet Tan Phat Co., Ltd., provided VND46 million for the newspaper to buy Tet gifts for 230 poor households of An Khe Town in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai.

The Hong Phat Real Estate Company presented VND50 million while the owner of restaurant Van Map in Tien Giang Province traveled a long distance to bring VND20 million for the program.

Mr. Luu Quoc Cuong and his friends contributed VND51.5 million while a woman from Soc Trang Province provided VND5 million for the program.

The get-together raised nearly VND1.1 billion and US$200 to buy Tet gifts for poor people, Mr. Tham announced at the end of the meeting.
From January 18, representatives of the newspaper and donors will buy and transfer Tet gifts to poor people, Mr. Tham added.
